What To Say To Someone Who Has Experienced Pregnancy Or Infant Loss

We understand it can be hard to find the right thing to say, especially in a fragile situation such as pregnancy, infant, or child loss. We know first hand that everyone is truly coming from a good place when they tell you “it’s going to be okay” or “they are in a better place”, but sometimes it is nice to hear something a little less overused. This is why we wanted to share some more helpful words of encouragement to say instead.

“You gave them a beautiful life”
This is a great option if you are speaking to someone who has lost a child. Giving them the reassurance that they provided their child with love and kindness can really make a positive impact.

“You can tell they were so happy to have you in their life”
As a parent, you just want your child to be happy. When someone tells you they could see the happiness radiating from your child when they were with you, it will make them melt.

“I don’t know what you are going through, but I am here for you”
For someone experiencing pregnancy loss, it is always better to state you don’t know what they are going through instead of trying to relate when you simply can’t. Just because you have not experienced this type of loss does not mean you can not be a support system for those who have. Make sure they know you will be there whenever they are ready to talk.

“You can always talk about them with me”
By making sure they know that you are a safe space for them to talk about their child, their emotions, and their experience can mean a lot.

“Your baby existed, we won’t forget about them”
This one might sound a little funny to some, but by reassuring them that you acknowledge the existence of their child, specifically when they have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, can mean the world to them. Let them know you won’t forget about them. Many parents will worry that their child will be forgotten because they are not physically with us.

But, sometimes the most important thing isn’t what you say, but whether you’re there or not...
